The Lake House

Chicago, IL, USA
Talking about Movies and Architecture... There's life in Holywood beyond New York, and locations too!

Few cities can rival Chicago’s architectural splendor — a metropolis that marries historic grandeur with modern innovation. For cinephiles and romantics, 'The Lake House' (2006) offers a unique lens through which to experience the city’s evocative beauty. Starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, the film isn’t just a love story across time —  it’s a cinematic tribute to Chicago and its architectural legacy. If you’re a fan of the film or planning a trip to Chicago, this guide will walk you through the real-life filming locations and iconic buildings that inspired the movie’s dreamlike setting.

Whether you’re an architecture buff, film lover, or romantic dreamer, 'The Lake House' offers a unique way to view Chicago. Its blend of iconic buildings, serene natural locations, and architectural references make it more than a love story — it’s a visual journey through one of America’s most beautiful cities.

One of the most memorable aspects of 'The Lake House' is how it showcases Chicago’s architectural richness — particularly through the life of Keanu Reeves’ character, an aspiring architect and son of a legendary designer. Several real-life architectural landmarks feature in the movie, such as the city’s unique skyline, with its mix of early 20th-century skyscrapers and sleek modern towers. Key scenes were filmed along the Chicago River and near Millennium Park, where reflective surfaces and linear designs echo themes of connection and symmetry found in the plot.

The Daley Plaza and its surrounding Loop neighborhood provide a backdrop for scenes of everyday life in Chicago — yet through the film’s eyes, even the mundane becomes cinematic. Watch for scenes showcasing the famous Flamingo sculpture by Calder and the open, modernist lines of civic buildings that shape Chicago’s downtown character.

One of the most lush and visually striking locations in The Lake House, the Garfield Park Conservatory is a must-visit. It’s one of the largest and most stunning botanical conservatories in the nation, and it appears during a romantic walk in the film.

The famous glass lake house was a temporary set built on Maple Lake in the Cook County Forest Preserves, located about 20 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. While the house was dismantled after filming, the scenic lake and tranquil forest area are still open to the public for hiking, fishing, and nature photography.

Although the actual Farnsworth House doesn’t appear in the film, its influence is unmistakable. Designed by modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Farnsworth House is one of the most iconic glass houses in the world and served as the visual inspiration for the lake house design.
