Why Le Relais de l'Entrecôte Is a Paris Dining Experience You Can't Miss

Paris, France
I believe some restaurants become famous because of their menu, and others become unforgettable because of the memories you create there. On my latest trip to Paris, there was one reservation I simply couldn't miss. Even with the rain pouring down on the city, my sister and I made our way through the wet streets to Le Relais de l'Entrecôte Saint-Honoré, determined to experience one of Paris's most iconic dining traditions.

As someone who could happily eat French fries every single day—and who grew up thanks to my father learning that a perfectly cooked steak au poivre is one of life's greatest pleasures—I knew this restaurant had to be part of my Paris itinerary, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable meals of the trip.

Le Relais de l'Entrecôte has built its reputation on a remarkably simple concept. There is no lengthy menu to study. No difficult decisions to make. Instead, you're asked just one question: "How would you like your steak cooked?" That's it. The legendary meal consists of a crisp green salad with walnuts and a mustard vinaigrette, followed by sliced entrecôte steak served with the restaurant's famous secret sauce and an endless-looking mountain of thin, perfectly crisp French fries.

Sometimes, simplicity is the greatest luxury.

Happiness Is a Plate Full of French Fries

If there's one thing everyone who knows me can tell you, it's this: I have a serious weakness for French fries. Golden, crispy, perfectly salted... they might just be my favorite food. So imagine my excitement when a generous plate of steak and fries arrived at our table.

And then imagine my surprise when, just as we were finishing, our server returned with another complete serving of steak and fries. I had absolutely no idea this was part of the experience. The second helping felt like one of Paris's best-kept dining secrets—and for a French fry lover like me, it was pure happiness.

This meal brought back memories long before I ever booked a flight to France. Growing up, my father introduced me to the simple pleasure of a good steak au poivre. He taught me that great food doesn't need endless ingredients—just quality, care, and classic technique.

Sitting in one of Paris's most celebrated steak restaurants, sharing that experience with my sister, I couldn't help but think of him. Travel has a beautiful way of connecting the places we visit with the people who shaped us. Some meals feed your appetite, others feed your memories. This one did both.

The weather couldn't have been less inviting. Rain poured over Paris as we walked through Saint-Honoré, umbrellas in hand, wondering if we should have chosen somewhere closer, and I'm so glad we didn't.

As Woody Allen would say, Paris looks even more beautiful when it rains. There's something wonderfully romantic about Paris in the rain. The reflections on the cobblestones, the warm glow spilling from restaurant windows, and the anticipation of finally sitting down to a comforting meal somehow made the entire evening even more memorable.

By the time our glasses were filled with the restaurant's house red wine, the rain outside no longer mattered.

To accompany our dinner, we ordered the house red wine. Rich, smooth, and wonderfully balanced, it complemented the famous secret sauce and steak beautifully. Sometimes the simplest combinations are still the most satisfying: steak, crispy fries, a glass of French wine, good conversation, and Paris outside the window. There isn't much more you could ask for.

Is Le Relais de l'Entrecôte Worth It? Without question.

Its legendary reputation isn't built on elaborate presentation or an overwhelming menu. It's built on consistency. Every detail—from the perfectly cooked steak to the addictive sauce and endless fries—has remained delightfully unchanged for decades. That's exactly why people continue lining up for a table.

Tips Before You Go

If you're planning your own visit, here are a few things worth knowing:
  • Expect a focused menu centered around steak-frites.
  • Save room—the second serving is part of the experience.
  • Arrive early or be prepared to wait, especially at dinner.
  • Don't skip the house wine.
  • Come hungry.

My first visit to Le Relais de l'Entrecôte was everything I hoped it would be—and then some. It wasn't just about tasting one of Paris's most famous steak-frites dinners. It was about embracing a rainy Paris evening, laughing with my sister over an unexpected second serving of fries, remembering the meals my father taught me to appreciate, and discovering why this restaurant has become a true Paris institution.

Sometimes the most unforgettable travel memories aren't made at famous landmarks. Sometimes they're made around a table, with a perfectly cooked steak, endless French fries, and the people you love beside you.

If you're visiting Paris and wondering where to enjoy one of the city's most iconic meals, make your way to Le Relais de l'Entrecôte. Even if it's pouring rain, I'd tell you exactly what I told myself that evening: Go anyway, you'll be glad you did!
