Some summer afternoons don't need much of an itinerary. All you need is a pretty pair of shoes, a walk by the river, something sweet, and enough time to watch the light change over the Douro - that was the mood for my latest afternoon in Cais de Gaia.
I wanted to make the most of the last stretch of summer, so I put on my new obsession gorgeous pink Allegra sandals from Davesino, headed down toward the waterfront and decided that gelato was obviously part of the plan (because summer rules are different).
Cais de Gaia is one of those places in the Porto area that is difficult to resist, particularly when the weather is beautiful, have you been there? Across the Douro, you have Porto's historic skyline. On the Gaia side, the waterfront stretches alongside the river, with restaurants, wine cellars, cafés and plenty of places to stop and simply enjoy the view.
The Pink Sandals Moment
For this particular afternoon, I wore the Davesino Allegra pink heeled sandals. Taking these beauties for a walk felt like exactly the right way to spend a summer day. The color instantly gave the outfit that feminine summer feeling I wanted, while the heel made the look feel a little more dressed up than a typical sightseeing outfit.
Pretty enough for photographs, and practical enough for actually experiencing the place.
Naturally, no summer walk is complete without gelato, right? My stop was Amorino in Cais de Gaia, located at Avenida de Diogo Leite 80, right along the waterfront. The Gaia location serves gelato and sorbets as well as gelato macarons, crepes, waffles and other desserts. And yes, the famous flower-shaped gelato makes the whole experience particularly photogenic.
But this is one of those occasions when the pretty presentation actually matches the setting + Gelato in hand + The Douro in front of you + Porto across the river = a good summer memory.

What to Do in Cais de Gaia
If you're planning your own afternoon around Cais de Gaia, I'd keep the itinerary deliberately loose:
- Walk the waterfront
Start along the river and take your time. The views across to Porto are one of the main reasons to come to this side of the Douro, and the waterfront is particularly beautiful later in the day.
- Visit a Port wine cellar
Gaia is historically associated with Port wine, and the wine cellars are one of the area's defining experiences. This is a great option if you want to add something cultural to an otherwise leisurely afternoon.
- Take the cable car
The Gaia cable car is an easy way to get a different perspective over the city and river—and it saves your legs for the important things. Like gelato.
- Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge
Walking across the bridge gives you one of those classic Porto views that never really gets old. You can also turn the afternoon into a Porto-Gaia loop rather than staying entirely on one side of the river.
- Stay for sunset
This is the one I wouldn't skip: the combination of the Douro, Porto's historic buildings and the changing light makes late afternoon one of the prettiest times to explore the area.
My Ideal Cais de Gaia Summer Afternoon
If I were planning the perfect version of this day, it would look something like this:
Late afternoon: arrive in Gaia and walk along the waterfront.
Golden hour: stop for photographs and take in the views toward Porto.
Early evening: gelato at Amorino.
After gelato: explore the wine cellars or continue walking.
Sunset: find a good viewpoint and stay until the light changes.
What to Wear for Cais de Gaia
Cais de Gaia is a good place to embrace the idea of pretty but practical summer dressing. I would choose:
- comfortable sandals or low heels
- a lightweight dress or skirt
- breathable fabrics
- sunglasses
- a small crossbody or shoulder bag
- minimal jewelry
- one statement accessory
The Perfect End-of-Summer Mood
Maybe the reason I enjoyed this afternoon so much is that it felt completely uncomplicated. No elaborate plans, and no packed schedule. Just a pretty outfit, a walk, the Douro and gelato.
And before the season disappears completely, I intend to collect a few more afternoons exactly like this one.
